Jayne Uyehara, leader and legislative coordinator of the Business Action Center program for the Department of Commerce & Consumer Affairs’ Business Registration Division led this interesting and informative CLE.  She spoke about the services this organization provides, which constitutes a one-stop shop for business registration serving the public.  Topics of the lecture included business registration, registering a business name, Hawaii mark registration, state versus federal registration, business compliance, annual reports, reinstating an entity that has been dissolved, tax licensing, employer’s registration, Federal Employer Identification Numbers from the Internal Revenue Service, other licenses and permits, and program partners which include the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), the Hawaii State Bar Association (HSBA), and SCORE Association.  BAC and their program partners’ services are free, and the BAC can be reached at:

The Business Action Center will assist you in obtaining a GET license number and how to obtain a federal tax ID number online.  A representative from the Small Business Administration is there every Monday to help people obtain loans and the SBA can even guarantee loans up to 80%.  Every Thursday experienced attorneys volunteer their time to meet with people for 30-minute consultations.  On every 3rd Tuesday of the month, someone from SCORE, a part of Counselors to America’s Small Business, a national non-profit organization, is available to give free advice and counseling to business owners.
